When I work with a subject for a portrait I use video and sketch work. So I chat with and sketch people whilst I record them. This allows me to get to know the person and for them to relax in my company. The trouble with portraiture is that most of the work is private and I don’t get to show them. So I will often paint people who I admire. And with someone like Aisling, there’s a lot of TV footage to work with. I sat through hours of footage to capture Aisling’s on-screen personality. And enjoyed every minute. One of my favourite Irish people and a brilliant writer and actor.
